Sail Fleet Update

Can’t believe it’s already nearing the end of July! The Magic Juan Series and San Juan 24 North Americans are already in the history books, the Summer Series is in full swing and Race Week is just around the corner. We must be having fun because time is definitely flying by this season!

The Magic Juan Series finished a few weeks ago. It was another series marked by great sailing conditions and close competition. The podium finishers were made up of the usual suspects. In fact, the top three finishers were the same three boats as in the previous Spring Series, just in different order. Coming out on top, we had Dean Vandament and the crew of Wind Warrior in first. Dave Steckman and the crew of Juan Solo finishing second followed by Chad Holcomb and family on the Yeah Dogg! Great work sailors!

This June the Yacht Club, spearheaded by San Juan 24 guru Dave Steckman, again hosted the San Juan 24 North American Championship. It was another awesome event with the Yacht club providing it’s fantastic facilities, food, and hospitality. On the water Byron Skubi and his tireless band of volunteers provided the expertly choreographed ballet required to smoothly pull off a dozen races. The fun meter was pegged all weekend with awesome weather and tight racing. As the cream rose to the top, it was Oak Harbor’s own Dave Steckman battling for top place. In the end, Seattle’s Mark Bradner and the crew of Return emerged victorious, with Dave Steckman and the crew of Juan Solo having to settle for second. Another Seattle Boat ,Grauer Geist, skippered by Kenneth Johnson rounded out the podium in third.

This year’s Race Week comes with a note of bittersweetness as this addition will be the last time this much loved Regatta will be hosted here in Oak Harbor. We will treasure all the great memories that have been had over the many years. Make sure to come out and enjoy the fun and festivities that have made this event legendary. Let’s see this year’s event out with a roar and wish Race Week well as it moves on to its new Point Roberts venue in 2020.nnnStay safe, sail fast!
